HUDSON — Once a Hudson Hawk himself, Trevor Sawyer is back at Hudson High School — but this time, he’s trading his backpack for a staff badge.
Sawyer, a member of the Class of 2019, was involved in several extracurricular activities during his time at Hudson High. He participated in band throughout all four years, playing trombone since third grade and later picking up the euphonium during his junior year.
He was also a member of the Drama Society and performed in 20 to 30 productions, including his favorite, As You Like It. In addition, Sawyer joined the Trivia Club during his junior year.
Throughout high school, Sawyer enjoyed staying involved and being part of the Hudson High community — something that played a role in his decision to return.
Outside of school, he participated in martial arts and archery and earned a black belt in karate. He said he still misses archery.
After graduating, Sawyer attended Quinsigamond Community College, where he earned his associate degree. He later transferred to the University of Rhode Island and earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental science.
Following college, Sawyer worked as an environmental specialist at UMass Amherst Hospital but said the job was not a good fit.
“Working as an environmental specialist felt like being a janitor with a cool title,” Sawyer said.
After realizing the job wasn’t for him, Sawyer said he thought back to something he had always considered.
“I’ve always thought about being a teacher,” he said.
Sawyer was hired in January as a day-to-day substitute and said he quickly realized he enjoyed working in the classroom more than his previous job. He became a full-time substitute in March.
By June, he applied for a full-time teaching position and was hired. He now teaches chemistry and marine ecology, an elective course at Hudson High.
Sawyer said he enjoys his job and looks forward to coming to school each day.
“I love my job,” he said. “I’m excited and happy to come in every day.”
