HUDSON — Milena Da Costa, a new paraprofessional at Hudson High School, hopes to support students and eventually become a teacher.
Da Costa, who is working toward her teaching license, said she would like to teach eighth- or ninth-grade math or work with English learners in the future.
Although this is her first year in a school setting, she has prior experience working with children. She previously worked as a pediatric dental assistant and at the Boys & Girls Club in Hudson.
“I used to help them with their homework and answer their questions,” Da Costa said.
Born in Brazil, Da Costa moved to the United States at 10 months old and grew up in Marlborough. She attended a private Catholic school before going to Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School for high school.
Da Costa said she hopes to remain at Hudson High once she earns her teaching license.
“It’s close to home, and you build relationships with the staff and students,” she said. “You want to grow with them academically and professionally.”
In her current role, Da Costa assists students in class, substitutes when needed and supports students during testing.
She said the supportive environment at Hudson High has made a strong impression.
“I do love the staff. They want you to succeed and grow and help the school improve,” Da Costa said.
She also said she appreciates the students’ kindness during her first year.
“They are friendly and accepting, especially because I’m new,” she said.
Da Costa said she is grateful for the opportunity and excited about the future.
“I’m very grateful for the people here,” she said.
