This year the Homecoming rally crowned only the kings and queens of class spirit. In years past there was a court and a king and queen for each grade, but that’s not happening anymore.
History teacher Pam Porter, one of the advisers for the Spirit Committee, said that “kids were getting voted for all the wrong reasons.”
Some students were getting bullied and made fun of because of their nomination. Students tended to pick the kids that did not want to be chosen.
Movies often show homecoming in a negative way as well. They always have the most popular boy and most popular girl win king and queen, but that’s not what the rally is about.
Some students agree that the homecoming court is a waste of time.
“I believe it is kinda dumb,” said freshman Sabrena Porto.
However, some students think that it is tradition. Hudson High has had a homecoming king and queen for a long time.
“I like the idea of having king and queen for homecoming because it’s tradition, but since there were too many bullying incidents, people nominating others as a joke, I’m glad we chose to do without it,” says senior Cassandra Chaves.
When people were nominated, they would be nervous all day about walking in front of the whole school, Chaves said. They were also embarrassed.
At the end of the rally many students did not seem to miss the tradition. Freshman Rebecka Monteiro felt that “it really does not matter.”
