Who is your fashion influence?
My mother, because she was the one that taught me how to pick out my clothes and she helps me shop. I look to her for guidance when it comes to shopping.
What do you look for in an outfit?
I always look for something comfortable and different from what people wear at school. In Holland people are very “free” with their style and I think I got a bit of that.
How would you define your style?
Serious, sophisticated fashion?
You lived in Holland for many years; how is it different from the U.S. in terms of style?
In Holland, diversity is very much encouraged. People aren’t judged if they come in to school with something totally different, like mismatched clothes, or girls in baggy, low cut pants. There are many items of clothing I wouldn’t wear to school here because I’m sure people would look at me strangely.
What expectations did you have of the U.S. when you first arrived?
When I came to the U.S. I thought everyone was going to be very fashionable. I was surprised to find people coming to school in pajamas. Though I’m already getting used to it, and a lot of times I don’t put a lot of thought into what I wear.
What are your plans for your future, and how will your style influence it?
I want to be an interior designer, so I think my clothes will give customers a preview of my taste and how I’ll decorate their homes.
