With all the excitement about the Avengers on May 4, Liz’s Flick Picks will start talking about the First Avenger, Captain America.
Captain America is the comic book adaption that takes place during World War II and follows supersoldier Steve Rogers. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) was a weakling from Brooklyn who wanted to join the US Army but was always rejected until he is recruited by Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) to be the test subject in his genetic experiment to create supersoldiers. Steve Rogers turns into Captain America and is sent to Germany to defeat the Red Skull and his Hydro army.
This isn’t Chris Evans’ first superhero role for Marvel. He was also in the Fantastic Four as the Human Torch. It is very interesting how he went from playing the rebel, charmer, butt-kicking Johnny Storm to soldier, selfless, butt-kicking Steve Rogers. The two characters are so different from each other that it would be hard to picture the Human Torch in the role of a U.S. soldier.
Hugo Weaving was a perfect fit for the menacing Red Skull. The German accent, the red make-up and Weaving’s excellent acting made the Red Skull come to life. In one shot Captain America and Red Skull are standing on a bridge that is splitting apart, and the warehouse is on fire. Good old Captain America is in his red, white and blue outfit, and Red Skull is ripping off his normal-looking face and revealing his Red Skull. It was great imagery showing how these two were completely different even though they both took Abraham’s serum.
Captain America ends on a cliffhanger that picks up in the Avengers. Go check out the Avengers in 3D and read my review about it. That’s all for Liz’s Flick Pick for this week.
