You might haveseen interim assistant principal Paul Maiorano around the halls, but you might not know who he really is.
Mr. Maiorano has spent 34 years of his life teaching in a classroom and leading as an administrator. Two and a half years ago he retired and spent that time traveling around the world with his wife and kids. Recently he wanted to come back to school and feel the joy of helping students out again.
“I really loved it, every day I looked forward to coming to work so this was a good opportunity for me,” Maiorano said.
“I always had a feeling like I wanted to come back to school.”
Previously, Maiorano worked in Waltham and Framingham. One thing he liked about the towns was the culture and diversity of people. He found that Hudson replicated that diversity from his previous workplaces.
“Throughout my career, I’ve worked with students from all backgrounds and I’ve really appreciated that. It’s a great way to get a slice of America.”
He likes that Hudson is a close community and thinks the building has a positive environment and relationships. Specifically, he was impressed by Dr. Medeiros and Mr. McAnespie and their knowledge of the students.
“When you have solid relationships with students, you typically have good culture.”
Maiorano hopes to mainly learn and adapt to the environment around him. He wants to make sure he knows the environment before making any decisions.
“Whenever you start a new job, the first thing you should do is a lot of listening and learning,” Maiorano said. “Someone gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason.”
His goal is to empower students and staff. Ideally, when he leaves everyone will still feel the empowerment he brought to the school.
“When people feel empowered, they are more willing to put in more effort.”
Despite being the assistant principal for grades 10-12, Maiorano thinks of himself as more of a teacher than an administrator since he was a teacher for over half of his career.
One of his goals is to become more engaged with the students in the school. He has spent his free time at basketball games and other after-school activities.
“The interaction with students and staff is what makes me want to come to work each day.”
After the school year, Maiorano plans to travel to Alaska with his family. He is driving there in a van with his wife. Once summer is over, he wants to find another job similar to this position.
Maiorano loves to travel. He has visited 35 countries over the last two years and loves exploring different cultures and experiences. Recently, he got to swim with whale sharks in the Philippines.
He enjoys more exhilarating activities. He likes getting out of his comfort zone. He has gone white water rafting and went on a hot air balloon, despite being afraid of heights.
Another one of his favorite places was Oman in the Middle East. He enjoyed the Muslim culture as it was something different than he was used to. Something that stood out was the hospitality of the people in Oman. He got invited into people’s homes and ate dinner with them as if he knew them his whole life.
“Folks who had the least gave the most,” he reflected on the trip.
Mr. Maiorano is a person who is passionate about his job, loves his family, loves to travel, and lives life to the fullest. He is an inspiration for any student or staff member in the school.
“Every student is different and every student has their own story.”
