Midland Wachusett All-Star defensive back and Central Mass Divisional Defensive MVP are just a few of the awards Karl Sery has received. But he did not just sit back and let colleges come to him. He worked hard for what he has gotten.
In the fall he will attend Bryant University on a full football scholarship. He was a football star all through high school, but his work ethic has gotten him to the point he is at today.
“In the fall during practice I took it week by week and focused on what I needed to accomplish each day,” Sery said.
He works very hard to become the best he can be.
“Karl always went to the gym on his own time to work out and ran to improve his speed,” Coach Mac said.
Sery has had many people help him to reach his goals.
“Besides my mother, my teammates have helped me train, and my close friends have also supported me. It’s been a collective effort,” he said. “Coach Mac was a spokesperson for me when college coaches wanted to talk to me. He was my gateway to finding a perfect fit.”
Sometimes college searches can be stressful; it can be very hard to get noticed and stand out. In fact Coach Dan McAnespie says out of all his former players “only 5 or 6 players have gone on scholarships.”
“Karl did a lot of it on his own. He was able to get his name out there by going to one day camps so that colleges could evaluate him,” Coach McAnespie explained.
Looking for a college that fits you can often be difficult, but Bryant is the right fit for Sery. They were interested in him from the beginning.
“The coaches at Bryant are great; they not only focus on football but also stress the importance of school work,” Coach McAnespie said.
Sery is aware of the changes he may have to make to fit in with the new school and football team, but the commitment is just as important as it was in high school.
“Bryant is going to be a new experience. It is sad leaving Hudson High because I only know Hawks football, but it will be interesting.”
