Anatomy and Physiology I and II seem to be a student favorite because the topics are interesting, and the class is fun. Students enjoy dissecting frogs, pigs and cats. “We did a senses lab,” says senior Hannah Kennedy, “where we walked around the school blindfolded, and our partner guided us.” The topics and notetaking are just as fun as the dissecting and labs.
At the beginning of the year, students are given a notetaking book that corresponds with the lectures in class. This makes notetaking in that class very neat and organized, helping kids to study for tests and quizzes. Mike Nanartowich is also a class favorite because he makes class fun by using funny examples that are very relatable and interesting.
Forensics focuses on crime solving and fingerprinting through science that students seem to love. The class is based off notes and labs that focus on prints and impressions, toxicology and document examination. Students in class also discuss real forensics cases.
Students learn and apply techniques with evidence given in labs.
Pottery is another student favorite because it is a fun, hands-on class. In Pottery I, students learn all about pots, how to make them and the different types of pots. “One thing you do is learn how to make little pinch pots,” says junior Nicole Beaulieu. “It’s a lot of fun and very artsy.”
This hands-on class includes working with clay and building sculptural pieces. Some of the time students will paint their pots or creations. They use fireglazing techniques, while learning about carefully joining and smoothing out their pots. Students learn about glaze types and clay types, and they spin on the pottery wheel.
Creative Writing is another student favorite because students get to create their own stories. The class focuses on memoirs, fiction writing and poems. The course is good for students who are interested in the writing process and improving their own writing skills.
Students are asked to share out their story ideas and actively participate in critiquing each other’s work. Carol Hobbs makes the class fun by being involved and helping her students with their writing. She will also enter some of the students’ writing into competitions, and many students have won.
Cold War Era and Film is well loved and fun. “The class is enjoyable because we watch a lot of movies,” says senior Nicole Rossi. “The films are based off the 1940s through the 1960s Cold War Era.”
Most of the class time is spent watching movies, doing film analysis and taking notes. Tim Reinhardt makes the class fun because he is well prepared and is good at holding the students’ attention.
