A Nor’easter snowstorm caused Hudson Public Schools to have a 2-hour delay on April 4.
Yes, 2-3 inches of snow fell yesterday in Hudson making history becoming one of the only snow storms ever to have over an inch of snow in April. Some ski areas could receive upwards of 18 inches of snow at the peaks and mostly everyone else in Massachusetts receives around 2-8 inches of snow.
The last time it snowed in the spring was exactly 8 years ago yesterday in 2016 when there was a big storm that had 6.6 inches of snow. There have only been around 8 times in Massachusetts history that a snowstorm has happened and an even more rare time was in June of 1816 when there was big storm leaving 6 inches of snow on the ground to cause a late summer.
Another historical storm was the April Fool’s blizzard in 1997. Just two days before the storm temperatures reached a high of 63 degrees Fahrenheit in Boston. But what would have seemed to be an April Fools prank, 30 inches of snow dumped all around Massachusetts. Nearly 13% of New England lost power and or lost their electricity making this one of the biggest storms in history recorded in April in New England.
The 2023-2024 winter was the 6th lowest snowfall recorded in Massachusetts history. There was a combined 9.7 inches of snow from all year, so, unusually, we are getting a heavy snowstorm 4 days into April. This storm will make up a fourth of all of the snow from this past winter.
