Despite the great serves by the Colonels, the Hawks played well as a team when Worcester South came to town on September 20. The Hawks won the match in 4 sets, 3-1. The win got the Hawks back to the .500 mark, making them 2-2.
The match started off pretty close with both teams having good hits and serving the ball well. Worcester South began the scoring making the game 2-0. It didn’t take long though for the Hawks to start gaining momentum. The Hawks would go on a run to make it 10-3 and would take control early. They got some good serving from junior Chelsey Scovil and were able to get a few points from senior Laura Hydro during this run.
The Hawks seemed to communicate very well during this set, and it led to them being in complete control. You could easily hear the Hawks communicate where on the floor they were and where they wanted to be set up at to get a point. The team was in sync with each other, and it paid off on the court. South was able to come back a little bit late in the set, but the Hawks were able to fend them off and win the first set 25-17.
The second set was a different story for one reason, the serving of #5 on South. Her serves were powerful, and they had a line drive sort of style about them. The Hawks were unable to return many of her serves, and it was clear that she had turned the tides of the game a lot in the second set. She would be the main reason that the Colonels would win the second set, 25-13.
The third set was a back and forth battle. Both teams seemed focused on taking control of the game, with it being a 1-1 set count. The Hawks were glad to see #5 not serving anymore because of the trouble she gave them throughout the last set. This set could be described as a bunch of great volleys and shots for both teams. Nobody really wanted to take control of it. The Hawks would eventually take control though and finish off the set with a point and then a block my junior Madi Peralta. The Hawks won this set 25-20.
Coach Jennifer Wessell had some good things to say about her team. “I thought my middles, Madi Peralta and Nicole Moarr, played well. They had a couple blocks and a lot of kills.”
The fourth set was all Hudson, and they dominated throughout. They got off to a 4-0 lead, and they did not stop their attack. They were able to get a pair of aces from senior Laura Hydro to make it 15-4, and there was no looking back. The only blip on the set was when #5 was serving again, and she pulled South back into it, but there was no stopping the Hawks. They would go on to win the set and win the match.
“We had a few errors,” Wessell said. “Our passing needs improvement, but we had a decent amount of kills.”
Senior Sydney Sullivan had some good thoughts on the game as well. “We eventually were able to build up our energy and get good passes so we could take the lead and finish it.”
The Hawks got a big win against Worcester South, and they hope to use this win to motivate them for the rest of the season.
