The Hudson Varsity Baseball team advancesd to the Division 3 Playoffs with an 11-9 record. On Memorial Day Hudson clinched the playoffs with a 1-0 win over Marlborough.
The class of 2023’s graduation left the team without the talent and positions the seniors filled last season. The loss of those graduates came with a need for younger players to step up.
Freshmen Blake Freitas and Toby Edie have started and produced in many games on Varsity this year and show glimpses of a bright future for the team.
“I always wanted to play Varsity,” said Freitas, “and it was pretty easy to fit in because of the team.”
But for many on the team, a challenge like making this seasons playoffs wasnt even in mind going into Spring.
“At the start of the year, nobody thought we were going to make it,” said junior Second Baseman Jason Ford. “But when we started winning more games, we began to believe in ourselves.”
Hudson started out the season a little below average going 3-4 but quickly caught stride winning their next three games and obtaining a winning record. Hudson’s winning streak quickly diminished and the pattern of streaks continued when Hudson lost five games in a row putting them back below .500.
Senior Captain Michael Atwater said, “There was never a doubt of playoffs.”
Unfortunately, Hudson lost 5-3 to Pentucket in the first round of playoffs, but that does not discredit the hard work the team put in this season.
“We came into the season with a lot of new players and the odds stacked against us,” said Ford. “But we pulled it all together and we did great.”
