Environmental: Biden Administration Announces Rule to Strengthen Protection of Public Lands
The Biden administration announced a new federal conservation rule on April 18, 2024. The new rule affects 245 million acres of land, around 10% of the land in the United States. The agenda of the Biden administration looks for new power plant rules, permits for power lines, coal-burning power plants, and shielding Alaskan wilderness.
There is a backlash against Biden because of this rule. The senator of Wyoming wants to introduce a Congressional Review Act to repeal it. The National Mining Association said Biden’s new rule would get in the way of domestic mining projects.

Economy: A crucial report Wednesday is expected to show little progress against inflation
Inflation has been a devastating part of the US economy and many consumers are hurt by it. Citizens of the US have been hoping for prices to go down but might be shocked to find out there has been little progress made to stop inflation. Over the last few months, the consumer price index has barely moved.
Markets have been nervous about inflation and how it could affect their rate policy. As well, stocks have slowed down significantly after they were high at the start of the year.

Sports: O.J. Simpson’s death certificate confirms his cause of death, lawyer says
Former football player O.J. Simpson died Wednesday, April 10 due to prostate cancer. Simpson was accused of murdering his ex-wife and friend in 1994. He was acquitted of all of his charges in one of the most famous court cases and police chases in recent memory.
In May of 2023, Simpson posted on social media that he had cancer but didn’t specify the kind of cancer it was. In February, Simpson said he was in good health and was not in hospice. It seemed Simpson thought he would fully recover.

Education: States Direct Districts to Defy New Title IX Rule on Transgender Students
The Title IX rule makes it illegal for schools to deny transgender students a sex-separate facility and includes directives on how to deal with reports of sexual harassment and assault. Civil rights groups are happy with the rule but conservative state leaders argue that the rule violates rights and creates an uncomfortable environment for cisgender girls.
Governors and state education chiefs in multiple southern states have told school districts to directly defy the rule. Those leaders claim they don’t want Biden to be controlling their kids and schools.

Good News: After Childhood Cancer Diagnosis, Donor Bone Marrow from Little Sister Sends it into Remission
A young girl in England was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2020. The girl, Ruby Leaning, needed stem cells from bone marrow to treat the disease. Her cancer is usually able to be treated with chemotherapy, but her kind needed a bone marrow transplant as well.
Luckily, Ruby’s two-year-old sister Mabel was a perfect match and was able to donate her bone marrow. Chemotherapy didn’t work for Ruby, so the bone marrow bringing her cancer into remission truly saved her life.
