The new Breakfast Cart opened in early March, allows students to get a savory snack before starting their school day. The cart offers students free food such as milk, cereal, and granola bars.
Although breakfast is available in the cafeteria, the school received reports that students were asking for snacks in the morning and were not eating breakfast at home. The school did not have enough snacks to hand out to students, which led to the opening of the breakfast cart.
“It’s nice to be able to grab a quick bite for breakfast provided by the school because otherwise, I don’t make it at home,” said sophomore Lucas Pires.
The cafeteria vendor company Chartwells partnered with Project Bread which is a non-profit organization to help resource the cart.
The food is the same as previous offerings, but the location and visibility have led to an increase in breakfast participation by 30-40% said Dr. Medeiros.
When asked, HHS food service employee Kimberly Chaput said that they had as many as 60 students one morning. The cart is open even after classes start for students who may be a few minutes late to school.
“I use it every day… I hope they keep it because if you come in late, it’s right there, an easy and quick breakfast” said freshman Tayvon Meuse.
The cart will be open for the rest of the year and items can change daily according to Chaput who runs the cart along with colleague Wendy Bower.
Studies show that kids who eat breakfast are healthier and more physically active. It also benefits a child’s memory and concentration which is important in school.
“Students will be able to engage better in classes if they are not hungry,” said Medeiros
Though concerns about Tardy students being even more tardy have come to attention, Medeiros thinks the pros outweigh the cons.
“I do not think students are tardy because of the cart. Some students access the cart before the late bell rings, and they aren’t lingering in the cafeteria to eat,” said Medeiros
