Beep beep beep… It’s 6 am, you wake up from the sound of your alarm. What is the first thing you do? Grab your phone and check social media. 21 notifications, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, messages.

Cell phones are taking over our lives. Today, 71% of people sleep with or next to their cell phones. People are constantly on their phones and always have it with or near them. Many people use their phones as a distraction when having a difficult time doing something. It is an easy way to escape.

Many teenagers who have an upcoming assignment will work with their phone next to them. This is not good for students. Having their phone buzzing with messages right next to them will tempt them to use their phone and will get distract them from the work.

Today in society we are dependent on our phones and many people are becoming addicted to their phones, especially the younger generation. I believe that something needs to change because at this rate, people will be living through their phones.

The younger generations are growing up with all this technology so it plays a crucial role in their lives. Children are getting tablets at younger ages and they understand so much about how it works.

However, when does it get to the point of too much technology? Who is going to draw the line and make technology settle down? Many people are aware that there is a problem but they are unsure what to do about it.

A variety of studies have shown that you should keep your phone away from you while you sleep, as well as when working on something important, and this will only benefit the individual. I agree that people should create personal limits for themselves so they don’t become addicted to their phone.

Not only can cellphones be distracting, but they are also a big factor in one’s emotional well being. Social media such as Instagram and Facebook, capture individuals exaggerated/ best moments and this can bring down the confidence and self-esteem of another person.

After seeing some of your Facebook friends go to a concert or go on an amazing trip, you may feel left out and it may affect you emotionally. Many people have become depressed due to social media and comparing themselves to other people, often they compare themselves to people they don’t even know.

The original purpose of a cell phone was to make a phone call in the event you needed to get in touch with someone. However the purpose has started to change, a cell phone is looked at as a “multimedia tool”, showing that people don’t use cell phones for the same reasons anymore.

What used to be for just talking or sending an email, is now used for texting, playing games, navigation, taking pictures, and so much more. Cell phones may be helpful in many ways, however there needs to be some type of restriction to prevent people from getting so caught up in technology.

They need to be able to live in the real world and not talk behind a screen. Many teenagers have poor communication skills due to the fact that they talk to one another behind a screen all day and don’t have many social interactions.
