Coming into class this morning, senior Jeff Pike screamed, “No-Shave November, guys!” and then proceeded to have a conversation with the guys in the class about how he wasn’t going to shave for an entire month.
You hear a lot of people talking about it, but does anyone know where this term comes from or what it’s for? For those that don’t know, November is prostate and testicular cancer awareness month. “ No-shave November, a nationwide movement currently perpetuated by word of mouth and through social networking sites, is an event in which men abstain from shaving facial hair “ starting November 1, and then they don’t shave throughout the month until November 30 to bring awareness to the cause.
If someone wants to officially sign up, www.movember.com is the place to go! In 2010, this charity website was set up to explain the rules of the event which include #1) NO SHAVING! and #2) NO SHAVING! This website is also for people to be able to make donations to the cause. To get signed up on Movember, a person enters their information and uploads a picture of their “clean-shaven” face. Then throughout the month, these men, known as “Mo Bros,” make their way into “fine moustachery”. Movember Mo Bros then raise funds by looking for sponsorships for their “Mo-growing efforts.”
“Movember will continue to work towards helping to change established habits and attitudes and make men aware of the risks they face, thereby increasing early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment,” said a spokesperson from the charity. “Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November, and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.”
We all know cancer can affect not only the person that has the cancer but also the family and friends of that person. No-shave November is a great and humorous way of showing you care! So men… put the razors away!
