This week’s Liz’s Flick Picks are going to be supersized… literally. Fans of the Marvel movies have been pumped up about this movie ever since 2008. In the first Iron Man movie Nick Fury tells Iron Man at the end of the credits about “The Avengers Initiative.”

When a new threat is too powerful for Nick Fury and his S.H.I.E.L.D agents to handle, they call upon the best heroes in the world to team up and defeat Loki and his minions from taking over the world.

I love Mark Ruffalo as Hulk. He brought a more sarcastic, charming side to Bruce that we didn’t see with the last Hulk. He really added a new layer to Hulk. People expect the Hulk to smash things. There was indeed a lot of smashing and damage to a few alien skulls c0urtesy of Mr. Hulk.

The special effects were fantastic. It really looked like he was beating up aliens. There is one great scene where Hulk confronts Loki, and the result is just what everyone in the audience wanted to do with Loki at that point.  The movie has the best of everything. From Bruce Banner’s calm cool self to HULK SMASH! The Hulk was no disappointment. Mark Ruffalo is indeed the best Hulk ever, and there better be a Hulk 2 with him as Mr. Green.

We still don’t know a lot about Hawkeye. For those who haven’t read the comics, all we know is that he is partners with the Black Widow, and he can shoot arrows like a madman. For a good half of the movie he is under some kind of mind control. There are a few scenes where he is talking to Loki and a scientist, but he isn’t out there shooting arrows. I would have loved to see more of him because the only other time we saw him was in the movie Thor.  There are some awesome action shots where he is shooting aliens with his bow.

Speaking of Phil, a.k.a Agent Coulson, he was at his very best in the movie. When he meets Captain America Steve Rogers on the jet, he is just like a little boy meeting his idol. Phil, who has to be in his mid-forties, asked him, “Would you please sign my trading cards!” That had the audience laughing in their seats when I saw it.

Sadly, Phil dies. Yep. He dies. Just like that. One minute he is holding this mini bazooka, and the next minute Loki kills him. I didn’t like this. He shouldn’t have died! It was such a shocker! It took me by surprise. Phil was important because he helped get the Avengers together basically. However Phil’s death motivated the broken team to fight Loki and his alien minions.

Overall, Avengers had high expectations from all fans of the comics, and it did not disappoint. The Avengers is everything you expect from a Marvel movie only on steroids! It is one of the best movies of the year. Be sure to leave a comment at the bottom! Avengers is still in theaters in 3D.
