Battle of the Bands

Picture 10 of 10

The group formerly known as Sam Says probably looks familiar; they were the first place winners of 2011s Hudson's Got Talent!

You may have heard of HitchHiker and the group formerly known as Sam Says. If not, they are two bands from our very own Hudson High School. Either way, you can see them perform at the Hudson Elks on May 25 at 6 P.M. in collaboration with Andrew’s Helpful Hands.

The first group played under the name Sam Says at the Be Visible concert in April. HitchHiker has played at Harvest Café and other local spots.

They’re currently in the process of creating a new name.

Our music’s genre is along the lines of Indie Rock but does not fit precisely into a specific genre. We do not have much lyrical material (most of our music is instrumental), but we intend to create it in regards to political and/or societal absurdities, similar to Rage Against The Machine, Neil Young, Modest Mouse, etc., “says Matt Snow. “We all take part in the writing of our own music. However, Andy has been the only one so far to write lyrics.”

Sophomore Matt Snow plays guitar and bass. Junior Andy Ducey plays guitar, bass, drums, vocals, and keyboard. Sophomore Kevin Ducey plays guitar, bass, and drums.

By writing about political absurdities, we’ll challenge legislation or other government action that we disagree with. Similarly, while writing about societal absurdities, we’ll challenge common morals, ethics, and so on,” Snow continues. “However, while challenging these things, we intend to present alternative perspectives rather than offense.

For more, see their websites: reverbnation.com/samsays and their Facebook page, currently titled “New Name Soon.”

HitchHiker- “We like to ‘HitchHike’ through all types of music.”

We play every kind of music from country styled acoustic to heavy rock
metal music, “says Edj Andrews. “We don’t really have a favorite kind of music; we like pretty
much everything and we try to incorporate that into our playing. “

Eighth grader Buren Andrews does most vocal work and plays guitar and bass. Freshman Edj Andrews is the band’s drummer and lends vocals. Derek Hall, a freshman at Lunenburg High, plays bass and guitar primarily. However, they each play many other instruments, such as keyboard, violin, etc., and a little bit of everything else.

We all write the songs we play, switching around who writes lyrics, music,
 and backup/harmony,” states Edj.

You can find more HitchHiker on reverbnation.com/hitchhikermusic and their Facebook page.

If you’ve been keeping up with happenings at Hudson High over the past few months, you’ve probably heard of pianist Taylor Benson.

Taylor, who also goes by TBenz, has been playing piano for about nine years (along with various other instruments such as oboe and violin). He hopes to make even more albums in the future, and his first soundtrack of The Tempest can be found on iTunes.

I think my favorite thing about playing piano is the escape… you know? Having the ability to escape from anything,” says Benson.

You can also catch Taylor playing at the Andrew’s Helpful Bands event coming in a few weeks!

Tickets go on sale soon and can be purchased for $7 in advance or $10 at the door.

For more information, call Zee Swenson at (978)375-3704.
